What is OPC UA?

The Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture is a communication protocol and standard for data exchange from sensors to cloud applications. Among other benefits, it provides fully defined data models for over 60 types of industrial equipment. Its cross-platform approach ensures extensibility and interoperability over different hard- and software solutions. Originally developed by the OPC Foundation, the Unified Architecture is open source and widely adopted in the automation field. However, OPC UA reaches its limits when it comes to complex processes with real-time requirements.
